Here's Why Most Businesses Don’t Need a Data Lakehouse (Yet)

(Originally published on LinkedIn, this version has been adapted for our blog audience.)

We hear a lot about data lakehouses, AI, and the latest shiny tech. But let’s be real—most small to medium businesses (SMEs) aren’t there yet. In fact, many are still stuck in spreadsheets. They’re not building AI—they’re just trying to get a sales report that actually makes sense.

The truth is, most small businesses aren’t struggling—they’re just ignored.

They’ve got cash, customers, and grit. But here’s what they don’t have: time, trust in vendors and/or salespeople who only care if they can leach out 1,000 licenses off of their credit cards.

Here’s the thing: There’s a big gap between what tech promises and what small businesses actually need. Whilst vendors pitch the future, many of these companies are just trying to survive TODAY.

No wonder they treat new tech like some fancy enterprise software—marketed and sold as ‘plug-and-play,’ but ends up more like ‘plug-and-pray.’

So, before we all strap in for a tech lift-off, let’s pump the brakes and ask the questions that actually matter to them—starting with these eight:

1. Are we building tools for the top 1%?

Most tools are made for big companies. They assume you’ve got blazing-fast internet, an IT team on speed dial, and a budget fit for Elon Musk.

But most small businesses are working with duct tape, not data centres.

2. Are we allowing businesses to sit on data they can’t use?

Lots of businesses collect data but have no idea what to do with them. It’s like buying all the parts for a Lamborghini—and then just standing there, hoping it builds itself.

Without a plan, or at least some instructions, it’s just a garage full of expensive parts…and a lot of confused faces.

3. Are we helping—or just adding stress?

Tech is often sold as a one-size-fits-all fix. The reality is that for many SMEs, it just adds more pressure to them.

Small businesses don’t need tools that feel like they’re defusing a bomb while blindfolded. They just need stuff that works—simple, reliable, and designed to make life easier.

4. Are we assuming everyone has the same setup?

Cloud tools often need fast internet and tech skills. But what if a business doesn’t have either?

You can’t expect someone to drive a car without fuel or tyres—unless you’re filming a ‘Fast & The Frustrated’ sequel with an all-turtles cast.

5. Are we offering support—or just more complexity?

Transformation sounds exciting. But for many, it feels overwhelming.

If your “solution” needs a manual thicker than the yellow pages, it’s probably not helping.

6. Are we skipping the basics?

Not every business needs AI. Some just need better spreadsheets or faster computers. And honestly, a few might just need extra coffee breaks.

Start with the basics. Build momentum. Small wins always beat overblown promises—especially before the caffeine kicks in.

7. Are we helping them ask the right questions?

Data is everywhere. But without the right questions, it’s just noise.

It’s like having a map but not knowing where you’re going. Or worse—thinking north is always up.

8. Are we designing for everyone—or just the well-connected?

Most tools assume you’ve got fibre internet, a tech team…and maybe Gloria Jean’s next door.

But not every business is chasing the latest tech trends—and that's okay.

There are plenty of successful, hard-working Australian businesses that are thriving without bleeding-edge tools. And they might still rely on paper invoices, fax machines, or landlines with real buttons.

What they need isn't flashy innovation—it’s reliable tools AND practical advice that works, no matter what.

Start Small, Build Big (Later On)

So, what do SMEs actually need right now?

SPOILER ALERT: it’s not a data lake or an even fancier data lakehouse. Seriously, who names these things, anyway?

Here’s what they really need:

  • Systems that don’t break under pressure

  • Affordable tools with real ROI

  • Insights they can actually use

  • Support, not just software licenses

It’s about giving them tech that works now—not some industry dream they’re not ready for.

This means skipping the confusing setups and nailing the basics first:

  • Solid data foundations

  • Simple low-code tools for automation

  • Focused, high-impact goals

  • A realistic, steady path to growth

Once they master the basics and crush their goals, then maybe they can get those shiny, fancy upgrades—OR NOT.

Their call.

Because SMEs don’t need quantum physics; they just need tech that makes sense no matter where they’re at.

Wrapping It Up

Before we chase the next shiny tech trend, let’s remember: Most small businesses aren’t building data lakehouses—they’re just trying to send an invoice without crashing the Wi-Fi (and killing the office plant).

Let’s build tools that actually help them where they are—not in the cloud kingdom where the internet never hangs and Zoom never freezes.
